36 refugees and illegal immigrants, among them children caught in Zakynthos

Just after half past four this morning 36 refugees including immigrants arrived at the port of Zakynthos. The people, among them of which were children, were on board a sail boat when the port authorities discovered them just after midnight. The authorities have arrested two traffickers and seized the sailboat.  They were travelling south west of the Island in the vicinity of the shipwreck at that time. Port authorities detained the people and transferred by authorities to Zakynthos. Immediately welfare officers were alerted. On arrival at the port, an ambulance was on standby for first aid whilst authorities made the necessary documentation needed. The civil protection department of Zakynthos, headed by Mrs. Maria Mouzakis arranged for the people to be temporarily housed at the closed gym of Panagoula. Whilst the KTEL bus company offered to transfer them there. The hotel association of Zakynthos and in particular Mr Giorgos Tsourounakis and Mrs Christina Tetradi will provide meals required during their stay.
