A Port Station to be set up in Volimes.

A request from the Zakynthian authorities has been answered by the Ministry of Merchant Marine, which concerns the re-establishment of the Port Police Station at Volimes, which had been abolished and degraded down to a guard post in 2014.

In Government’s Gazette published on 24th December 2018, the Presidential Decree on the restructuring of regional port authorities – Greek coastguards, port authorities and the regulation of personnel issues, including the Volimes decision, was included.

The Gazette states: Article 22 (2) of the Presidential Decree. 81/2014 is replaced by the following:  2). A Port Authority is established, based in Agios Nikolaos Volimes, which administratively belongs to the Port Authority of Zakynthos and its jurisdiction, which includes the ports, bays and the lawful land area of LS-EL.AKT. with the corresponding spatial sea, is defined up to the contiguous axis joining the Schiza bay in the position with a geographic position φ : 37ο 46 35,11 Β and λ: 020ο 40 12,65Α with Katastari at the position with a geographical position φ : 37ο 51 21,29 Β and λ: 020ο 44 51,51Α ‘

Up and until recently, the Coast Guard operated from the beginning of May until the end of October, whilst operating on a 24 hour basis throughout that period it only required three personnel  for its operation, which was provided by the Coast Guard Service. The duties and responsibilities of the port is the control of traffic, either being passengers and vehicles of the ship that connects Kefalonia with Zakynthos by operating two routes a day, the professional and tourist vessels that operate in the Blue Caves and the Shipwreck, as well as the control of boats from Schinari, Porto Vromi, Makry Gialos, Miko Nisi towards the Shipwreck and the Blue Caves. They also deal with the control of four marine leisure businesses operating within the area which also fall under their jurisdiction.

After the decision was published in the Official Government’s Gazette (ΦΕΚ), it is expected that the staffing of the Service will be absolutely necessary.
