Agios Haralambos

In a springtime day, Zakynthos celebrated the memory of Agios Haralambos. The religious and festive events were completed with the standard litany of the Holy Icon  and a piece of his relic, which began with the sounds of the Artemisian Philharmonic from the church by the river, near the harbour, and from there over the stone bridge and passing through the alleys and streets of the parish to arrive at the church of Agios Dionysios  for the established prayer with believers worshiping and from there took the return road.

Earlier, Divine Liturgy was celebrated which was led by the Metropolitan of the island, Mr. Dionysios. The service and litany were attended by:
the mayor P. Kolokotsas, Deputy Mayor K. Koklas, the head of the municipal party “Together for Zakynthos” and candidate mayor G. Armenis, the Vice President of Hoteliers and President of Laganas hotels Kristina Tetradis, with her husband former minister An. Liaskou, city councilor Ant. Andreolas, representatives of the Security Forces and crowds of people.

In general he is honoured in our country in many places, such as Preveza, where he is also patron saint, and in Pyrgos, as protector from infectious diseases and in particular from the plague, which often in pictures is represented in demonic form which the saint tramples. Many are the narratives of the removal of the plague and salvation of different towns and villages of our country thanks to his mission.

For his sake and to express their gratitude the people, a year later, built the church in his name, originally wooden and then stone. The church did not manage to escape the devastating earthquake of 1953, so in place today is the new, post-earthquake church where the saviour saint is honoured,
