Anti smoking laws heard in Parliament

The health ministry’s bill, which includes the provisions on smoking, was introduced in Parliament last week.  After a consultation, it will be debated with Parliament members on October 15th.

“There can be no enforcement of laws and fines, unless the police help”, the health minister noted. Minister of Health Vasilis Kikilias seems determined to implement the anti-smoking law at all costs. He recently said that the complaints procedure for those who do not appear to comply with the ministry’s recommendations regarding the implementation of the anti-smoking law has been simplified. Specifically, Mr Kikilias announced the government’s intention to set up a three-digit telephone number to report complaints of offenders.

“There will be a three-digit number where you will be able to call the municipal police or the police, which will give a fine to the individual and a fine of up to 10 times the amount to the shopowner,” Mr Kikilias recently told SKAI in an interview.

Referring to public services, he explained that law-makers are politically responsible and made it clear: “In public places, smoking is prohibited, both in places of public interest, in playgrounds, and in open spaces where children play. And in vehicles where children are passengers, if a driver or a passenger smokes the fines will be from1,500-3,000 euros. “

The Minister of Health emphasized once again that “the anti-smoking law will be implemented. We will respect the rights of smokers, but obviously we will also defend the rights of non-smokers, passive smokers and especially children, which is an injustice and has a backlash in the country. “

Speaking about contribution of law enforcement, police or port authorities, that is, Mr Kikilias stated that without the assistance of theses authorities “there can be no enforcement of the law or fines”.

Finally, he announced that the government’s anti-smoking campaign would be presented by the prime minister himself at the end of the month.
