A spiritual leader with vision and ethos, the Meetropolit of Proussis (Bursa) Elpidoforos was unanimously elected the new Archbishop of America by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul on Saturday.
The 52-year-old Elpidoforos is considered as one of the people Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew trusts most.
He has an impressive CV and is a rare hierarch distinguished for his kindness and his love for the fellow people.
Elpidofofors was elected after Archbishop Demetrius was forced to resign due to mismanagement of the finances in the Archdiocese of America.
Elpidoforos Lambriniadis was born in Makrychori in Istanbul in 1967.
He studied Theology at the University of Thessaloniki and philosophy at the University in Bonn, Germany, where he obtained an PhD. He continued his studies in Lebanon where he improved his skills in Arabic language.
He was ordained deacon at the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1991 and he was appointed scribe of the Holy Synod in 1994.A year later, he was appointed Undersecretary of the Holy Synod, a position he kept until 2005,w hen he was promoted to Chief Secretary of the Synod.
He was elected Metropolit of Proussis in 2011 and in the same year he was appointed abbot at the Agia Triada Monastery in Halki.
he has served in many committees of the Greek Orthodox Church and those promoting the dialogue between the churches.
He is a member of the Global Council of Churches.
Archbishop Elpidoforos is expected to untie the Orthodox communities in America.
