Brexit, is a deal about to be struck?

We have been reporting on Brexit for group members ever since the referendum took place three and a half years ago. Always a contentious issue, the Brexit deadline is only two weeks away, but as yet there’s still no confirmed deal.

Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister has been in discussions with the EU this week and is currently seeking to get a deal. Talks have also taken place with the DUP as the Northern Ireland Border issue has become a major sticking point in the Brexit negotiations. Everyone is still in talks so that the UK can try and leave the EU in two weeks with a deal that everyone’s happy with.

EU Summit Meeting

There is also an EU summit meeting tomorrow, so the situation of negotiating a deal is undergoing tense negotiations in order to try and get something resolved for tomorrows EU summit. It’s unlikely a written agreement will be ready in time for tomorrows meeting, but sources say that an agreement in principle is being sought for tomorrows summit.

Saturday Parliament session

The UK Parliament is on standby to attend a sitting session of Parliament on Saturday – in two days time – to vote on the current deal being worked on; if the Government agree it’s workable. A motion will be tabled shortly for Parliament to sit on Saturday, which if agreed will start at 9.30am and end at 2pm. If a deal fails to be agreed by Parliament on Saturday, then Boris Johnson will write a letter to the EU requesting a delay to Brexit, in order to get a deal agreed. Despite saying that he thinks “no deal” is better than a delay, The BennAct law means that the Prime Minister will in all likelihood have to agree to a three month extension, of Article 50 to leave open a negotiating period until 30 January 2020.

The prospect of “no deal” is still there, but many reports state that Parliament are trying to avoid this option. A “No Deal” Brexit can’t however be wholly discounted at present.

General Election

Some sources are still stating that Labour would like a General Election, but as yet, no date has been set out for one, and it will be dependent on the results of the talks. Some sources have noted a slim chance of one in December, but at present there is no firm cause to warrant one.

At present the situation is changing or being updated on almost an hourly basis. We will of course update again as soon as there is more news.
