While we would expect Britain – which has already managed to vaccinate a significant portion of its population by building a strong immune wall – to plan to open more activities, new restrictive measures are expected to be imposed in the country from Monday.
More specifically, to limit the spread of a third wave of the pandemic, the country’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announced that the ban on travel abroad for those residing in Britain will be extended until July. Those citizens, in fact, who travel despite the warnings of the authorities and without a serious reason will be fined 5,000 pounds. Government sources, however, stress that no decision has been made yet.
These new restrictive measures thwart the plans of Greece, which until a few days ago, planned an imminent opening of tourism for vaccinated citizens, including the British, even from mid-May.
According to Daily Mail, the British government is considering a “traffic light” system for travel outside Europe. It warns, however, that several popular tourist destinations have not yet been certified as “green” and this may be delayed as vaccination rates are limited in the EU.
Many argue that such a decision would be disastrous for Britain but also for the millions of people working in tourism. “We allowed people to travel last summer without a single vaccination,” said Carl Henegan, a professor of medicine at Oxford University. Millions of British citizens have been vaccinated this year. “What else is needed to allow travel again?”
On Saturday, 27 people were vaccinated per second in the United Kingdom. In fact, according to the authorities, the administration of both doses of the vaccine for those over 50 will be completed by the end of April.
Currently, 35 countries are included in the list of red countries in which travel for residents of Great Britain is not allowed. These include the whole of South America, South Africa, the UAE and Qatar.
The opening of activities in the country is planned to take place in six phases/steps,
Three of which will be completed by mid-May.
Step 1 : From March 29, up to six people will be allowed to gather outdoors. As for inside venues, this number is limited to 2-3 people. Some outdoor sports will also be allowed.
Step 2 : It could take effect on April 12th. It includes the opening of some retail stores, as well as businesses such as hairdressers and restaurants.
Step 3 : According to government officials, it could operate from May 17, when it is planned to allow up to 30 people to gather outdoors.
