Complaints about sea pollution… Hotels closed and tour boats unoperational.

Confusion among residents over the last couple of days in regards to our waters and beach areas.

Areas in specific were northeast of our island when people noticed what seemed to be sewage floating on the water.

Immediately, environmental groups contacted the port police.Residents in the areas were up in arms wanting to know what was causing it.

Hotels not open, boats not being used.

Due to covid-19 restrictions the idea that a hotel or cruise boat causing the problem was ruled out. However, people wanted answers.

Reports in our local papers this morning “Hmera” have stated that according to naval circles, ships with Turkish flags usually carry out the practice of empting sewage in order to pollute the shores of tourist islands. It just happens that a tanker boat sailing under a Turkish flag has been seen.

If this is true, in this case the issue does not only fall in the hands of our local authorities, but also on a national basis.

The port authority is definitely responsible for further research, both from air and from the sea.

Phytoplakton… that time of year.

Zakynthos Informer spoke with one of the environmentalist groups here on the Island. Mr Dimitris Kladis who is well known for campaigning for environmental issues and for clean waters of Zakynthos stated, “This time we can’t hide behind our finger, this has got nothing to do with what goes on in summer, this is phytoplankton! It is the time of the year, unfortunately with the sudden heat this is what has been caused.”

We have had some unusally high temperatures at the moment. A sudden change in sea conditions from cold to warm doesn’t help.

Phytoplankton thrive along coastlines and continental shelves. Like plants on land, phytoplankton growth varies seasonally. In Zakynthos blooms peak in the spring and summer, when sunlight increases and the relentless mixing of the water by winter storms subsides, populations drop off in summer.

Awaiting results.

At the moment the alarm bells have rung in all departments, samples have been taken by the necessary authorities in an effort to determine exactly what caused the phenomena. For now, all we can do is wait for the results and an “official” statement that should be made within the next few days.
