Coronavirus Greece:- 55 new cases and 4 new deaths.

The number of cases of coronavirus has increased by 55, as announced by the Ministry of Health.

A total of 2,463 cases have been recorded in our country

The representative of the Ministry of Health, infectious disease specialist Sotiris Tsiodras, announced on this afternoon 23rd April, 55 new cases of coronavirus in our country and four new deaths. A total of 125 deaths have been reported.

Regarding the new cases, Mr. Tsiodras noted that most of them concern health structures with epidemics. We have a total of 2,463 cases today, with 56% involving men. 574 cases, (24%) are considered travel-related and 1,131 (46%) are related to an already known case.

Also, 52 of our fellow citizens are intubated. Their average age is 66 years. 15 are women, 29%, and the rest are men. 85% have an underlying disease or are over 70 years old.

On a positive note 57 patients have left the ICU.

The total death toll is 125 across the country. Thirty-three were women and the rest were men. The average age of the deceased is 74 years and 90.4% had some underlying disease or age from 75 years and over.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health said: “The Committee of Experts has adopted recommendations in line with the Infectious Diseases Control Center to provide even fewer opportunities for the virus to be transmitted by asymptomatic people or people just before they show symptoms in areas of high congestion. For example, not in open spaces but indoors, such as transport, supermarkets, pharmacies and more. This use will be done simultaneously with a special communication strategy, masks should not be misused and the false sense of security is not given. More instructions on this subject and how to use masks will follow. ”

Mr Tsiodras added that “when one uses such masks, one should completely cover one’s face, nose and mouth, wash one’s hands very often with soap and water, an antiseptic should be used before applying the mask or when removing it. When removing it, do it in a specific way so that one does not touch the front surface of the mask, which is very easily infected. If the mask is disposable, discard it safely. If the mask is reusable, wash as often as possible with the usual detergent at 60 degrees Celsius.

“We simply have to understand the dangers.  One can get infected without wanting to, by touching and reusing a mask because of  the difficulty breathing from the mask and also from a false sense of security that prevents us from the most important things, such as hand hygiene and keeping distance. The mask should only be used as an supplement to the phase we want to neutralize if possible. The use of the mask does not eliminate the absolutely necessary measure to avoid touching our mouth, nose and eyes as much as possible. We understand when someone uses a mask how much easier it can be and transmit the virus if he has not used antiseptic on his hands, “the professor concluded.
