Coronavirus:- Greece has moved down on the world list!

With over a million cases of COVID-19 around the world… 1,218,105 to be exact Greece is looking really good with the quick restrictions that her government has put in place.

The top 10 countries infected with COVID-19 are:-

1) U.S.A

2) Spain

3) Italy

4) Germany

5) France

6) China

7) Iran

8) UK

9) Turkey

10) Switzerland.

Where is Greece?

Greece has moved from 38th place two weeks ago to 43rd place today on the worldwide list.

The Government has been thinking about putting extra restrictions due to some, still not adhering to what restrictions we already have in place. However, we must stress that the Government has not approved any of the ten extra measures as yet.

These two weeks are very crucial as we have seen a slight rise due to people entering our country recently from other countries that are within the top 10 listed. The numbers also include a ship load of people who were supposed to be going back to Turkey from Spain. Unfortunately, Turkey would not allow them to dock after hearing that some of the crew members were positive with COVID-19. From the 19 that had been confirmed that number soon rose to 120 within 24hours. Many students also have recently returned from countries where they were studying only to be found positive. All these people have been quarantined.

Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

Although we have had 70 deaths up until now it is worth noting that we have had 78 people recover from COVID-19. Most of them from ICU’s have been moved to special care areas or have been allowed to go home.

Anastasia Kotanidou, a professor of Pulmonology and intensive care at EKPA, and “Evangelismos” on Sunday morning spoke to SKAI and said that it is possible that tomorrow, Monday, it can be said that there will be no demand for ICUs.

No demand for ICU beds has also been spoken of in Patra as well.

So, for now it seems that our measures are working. We need patience! Sometimes that is difficul, some would say especially when it comes to having our freedom taken away.

I choose to look at it from another aspect, knowing that we all have saved thousands. We’ve acted on the wishes of our Health workers and those who are at the front line by sticking to what our scientists suggested and working with our Government,  taking actions to combat the virus.

One feels a slight optimism at the moment and our hard work seems to have paid off. Perhaps giving a sigh of relief that maybe we will win this fight.

Greece has become “the exception” and may also be a good example of how a country and its people when needed, can work together for the good of all. The fight is not over yet but we have covered a lot of ground in our favour during this battle. Keep calm Greece will win!
