Coronavirus:- Infectious disease experts… “we will only open when we have less than 1,000 cases.

Infectious Diseases Specialists: We will open only if we have less than 1,000 cases.

The scientific community as a whole expresses its concerns about the next step in regards to opening of retail shops in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

With the coronavirus reaping in the country and the pressure on hospitals across the country still suffocating due to intubation, market opening decisions are troubling both the political leadership and the scientific community who do not seem to be giving the “direct green light “to remove the lockdown and return to normal. This, after all, was seen after the extraordinary announcements of the government representative, Stelios Petsas, that schools, food industry catering and entertainment will remain closed until January 7th and the use of SMS will continue to be sent to 13033.

What remains to be decided, however, – which is expected to be announced by the end of this week – is what will eventually happen to retail and whether the stores will be open for the holiday season. The government spokesman did not make any announcements. However, the Minister of Development, Adonis Georgiadis, in the show “Hour of Greece” of OPEN TV, made clear the possibility that he will not even open the retail trade, if the epidemiological data is not improved.

Concerns about the resumption of the market were even expressed by most infectious disease specialists, who point out that in case of opening of retail stores, there is a possibility of overcrowding and in this case the coronavirus cases will increase dramatically. The placement of the professor of Genetics at the Medical School of Geneva, Manolis Dermitzakis, at SKAI, is typical. In his view, retail should only be opened if we have less than 1,000 cases.

He commented that from the moment we start opening, the aim is not to have large gatherings of people and to observe the measures. “If we open 1/3 of the activities, I’m afraid to have bigger crowds than to open them all. “I think the commercial ones can be opened, in terms of control the commercial ones are easier, we can control how many enter”, said Mr. Dermitzakis characteristically.

Absolute in not opening the retail trade also appeared the professor of Infectious Diseases, Nikos Sypsas, who spoke today on the show “Hour of Greece” on OPEN TV. The professor with his words did not leave room for relaxation, emphasizing that “whatever happens at Christmas, we will face it in January”. Mr. Sypsas characteristically stated that if Ermou Street in Athens is opened, it will become a source of coronavirus over-transmission.

For his part, the professor of epidemiology, Dimitris Paraskevi, commenting on the opening of the market, noted that if this is done, there should be certain conditions. In fact, he added that the steps must be done very carefully, so that there is no going backwards.
