Coronavirus measures:- MAY DAY… businesses closed, supermarkets and more.

May Day: Who works on holiday, how they are paid

This year’s May Day will be different, as the celebrations are postponed until after the lifting of the restrictive measures.

This year, May Day is different due to the pandemic of covid-19. The holiday will be normal, but the celebrations will be postponed to Saturday, May 9, ie after the lifting of the restrictive measures.

Moreover, as the government spokesman Stelios Petsas has announced, he predicts that “all the unions of workers, of all levels, but also of all political forces, will recognize with their attitude that this year is different. Like Easter, May Day. ”

He also stressed that in this context, the symbolic celebrations of May Day, by observing rules and distances, were postponed to the first Saturday after the lifting of restrictive measures.

However, the holiday will not be affected in terms of employees.

It is reminded that according to law, May Day has been declared a mandatory holiday with article 14 of Law 4468/2017 and therefore all the provisions for a mandatory holiday apply to employees and employers.

Therefore, the designation of May Day as a mandatory holiday means that on May Day, in addition to businesses that are allowed to operate on Sundays and public holidays, it is prohibited to employ workers and operate businesses.

Businesses that remain closed will have to pay their wage earners normally their wages without any surcharge. Those who are paid a salary will normally receive their salary, without a cut.

Employees, who are paid a salary and will work on May Day, are entitled to receive their usually paid salary and a 75% increase that will be calculated in their legal hourly wage for as many hours as they are employed.

SUPERMARKETS CLOSED

May Day is an official public holiday and supermarkets will therefore not open.

Given that May Day is an official holiday in Greece, consumers should keep in mind that on Friday, May 1, the country’s supermarkets will be closed.

Other companies in the supply chain, such as butchers, fruit and vegetable shops, etc., are expected to be closed by law, so citizens will be able to make their purchases either today, Thursday or Saturday.

It is recalled that according to a decision of the Ministry of Development and Investment, the new opening hours of the supermarkets, for the period April 25 – May 9, are as follows:

Monday to Friday 07:00 – 21:00

Saturday 07:00 – 20:00
