Covid19 update UK

Tonight Boris Johnson, UK PM gave an address to the British public in regards to Covid19.

The main points that came out of it are as follows:

  • Death rate and hospital admissions are coming down
  • Many lives have been saved
  • People must stay alert and control the virus and save lives
  • It’s been a colossal cost to way of life and economy
  • Many are fearful of the disease and lockdown and the future and it’s understandable

A plan going forward will be a roadmap to reopen society, when, how and on what basis. The plan is currently conditional, and the NHS must be protected, there must be a fall in death rate and infection, and PPE must be given to those who need it, also need to ensure the R doesn’t go back up over R1.

A new Covid alert system will be based on the level of R. It’s based on a traffic light system. From no Covid Level 1, up to a more severe Level 5.

We have been in level 4 whilst in lockdown but are slowly moving to level 3.

The advice is that we must reverse the epidemic in care homes and the NHS, and we must have a track and trace system as well as a good testing system.

The lockdown will not end this week, it will be modified however to the following, in a three point plan:

  • Anyone who can’t work from home should now be encouraged to go to work but should avoid public transport, and walk, bike or go by car
  • To ensure safe at work new guidance has been issued to employers
  • People should now take more time outside, can drive to other locations but must adhere to social distancing rules
  • The R will be monitored
  • By 01 June it’s hoped that there will be a phased reopening of shops and Primary Schools (Yr1 and Yr6), with Yr 10 Secondary students possibly having some face time with teachers
  • By July, subject to advice and science, it’s hoped that parts hospitality industry may open
  • A quarantine plan will be put in place on people arriving to the UK by air, details to be advised. No information was provided for any tourism or travel abroad, so at present the situation remains the same.

Tomorrow the Government will be publishing a detailed document that will set out all the relevant information for residents, businesses to be discussed in Parliament, including questions from the public

The PM said that people must still follow Government guidance and social distancing rules and they will not hesitate to go back into lockdown again if things go backwards.
