Der Speigel – Sun Sea and Covid free

“Sun, sea and Covid Free”, is the title of an article in Der Spiegel magazine about the small Greek islands.  In which the vaccination of the entire adult population has either been completed or will be completed soon. The focus of the tribute is Astypalea.

Astpalea

“Wonderful nature, blue waters, whitewashed houses, impeccable cuisine and famous hospitality. These are some of the good reasons to visit Astypalea. A small island between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese.  Due to its special shape, is known to Greeks as “Butterfly of the Aegean”. The article points out that now the tiny Astypalea can be based on a completely different advantage for the revival of tourism after the catastrophic summer of last year.

“There has not been a single case here since the start of the  pandemic. The island intends to remain without coronavirus, with a program of mass vaccinations. A huge benefit in the eyes of millions of potential holidaymakers. “

The author explains, small islands, such as Astypalea, have priority in vaccinations. All adults are vaccinated there. Some islands have already been fully vaccinated and dozens more will follow in the coming weeks, he said. According to the Greek government, it is about practical issues rather than a marketing strategy for tourism. It is, as explained, more expensive and inefficient to send medical staff many times to inaccessible islands.

The columnist also emphasizes that Greece is at the forefront of countries requesting the introduction of a vaccination certificate from the EU. This will help facilitate travel within the EU. But believes that things are moving too slowly at European level and that it valuable time may have been lost. Add to this the slow progress in vaccination in the EU, noting and talking about emergency plans prepared by Greece, as well as bilateral agreements with countries such as Israel, Great Britain and Russia.

“When the tourist season opens, travellers coming to Greece must meet one of three conditions, be vaccinated, have a negative test or have proof that they have contracted the disease and have antibodies,” it said.

Priority in vaccination will be given to tourism workers, about 800,000 people, while the article concludes with the recent statements of Tourism Minister Haris Theocharis in the context of the Berlin International Tourism Fair (ITB), on guarantees for health and safety every visitor in Greece.
