Zakynthos Informer has brought attention to the problem of illegal trade and it seems it still continues. Vans and privately owned cars more and more are becoming taxis, illegally of course. Even taking afternoon rounds without any authorization to allow them to do so. Yet another indication of the incredible bravery of some on the island that reveal, not only complete disregard for the laws but also for their fellow citizens. Those who do not hesitate to break the law and do their job, without having to bear any cost, of course, of practicing it as a legal profession.
Scenes out of a movie
According to a taxi driver the latest incident started at a popular beach bar -restaurant, located on a well-known beach in Vasilikos. “Taxi owners there with their vehicles, noticed ‘an unlicensed” van collecting some customers. They decided to act on their suspicion . A chase between the taxis and the illegal van began.” According to the complaint, “They were finally able to stop the illegal driver at the height of Xirokastello, by cutting off his path. The van tried to go back to the premises to leave customers.” However in vain as the driver said he was blocked. ” He could not leave and we called the police and came to investigate”.
Request for more checks by the Radio Taxi Association.
The problem is spiralling and there seems to be no incentive for those in charge to put a halt on those who are breaking the law… As the driver complains, “Some have already started and are making illegal transfers. People pay a fee, which is forbidden. The vehicle they use is not a taxi, there is no license to operate as one. Tourist van licensed under travel companies or if they have pre-paid itineraries, can only take customers … The law defines rules and regulations for travel agencies and rental companies. “
Mr. Golemis, President of the Zakynthos Radio Taxi Association, talked of the incident: “This is a huge problem in our industry. A problem that occurs on a daily basis. The particular man up to and including used his private car for itineraries. We have stopped him several times and caught two more buses this year. ”
This time the drivers were able to catch the man again red handed. They called the police and the law was upheld. The Taxi Association of Zakynthos is calling for more checks!
