A tragic and unbelievable incident happened at a home in the area of Ambelokipi when an electrical cable from the Electrical Company (ΔΕΗ) was cut under unclear circumstances until now, which caused the death of a horse and a dog. Everything happened so quickly. As the family were inside their house, the cable snapped and fell upon the horse. The owner contacted the police, who arrived along with a veterinarian, who certified the cause of the animal’s death. The owner of the property spoke of poor cable maintenance on the part of the Electrical Company (ΔΕΔΔΗΕ) concerned with maintenance and, as he said, is afraid for the safety of his family.
“If there was proper network maintenance when the wire was cut, a safety switch would have reacted. Unfortunately, that did not even happen. Our family could have been killed, because if I had have seen the horse go down, we would have tried to help it and could have all been killed, myself, my children, my mother-in-law and my wife. It remains a problem. The Electrical Company (ΔΕΗ) told me that this type of thing is happening in Greece and they have to handle the cables with clips. We pay the company (ΔΕΗ) for maintenance fees on the columns and cables, which ended up killing my horse and dog. I immediately got in contact with the Electrical Company; they replied and said that they will come. 1 -1.5 hours passed. I got in contact with the emergency number 100 and they were here in five minutes. I will hunt down the Electrical Company (ΔΕΗ) so that no man is killed,” he told us.
For her part, the Veterinary Lawyer of Zakynthos, Marion Oppel, points out that “As soon as I went to Mr. Dimitris Kardaris’ house, his dead horse was still warm and the moment we turned it over, as it had made contact with the electrical cable (ΔΕΗ) that hung, we noticed it was stuck to the horse. Due to having a high electrical current, the ground, the grass and all the side of the horse that died of electric shock had been burnt. At the time the horse was dying, the dog went over and took it with him as well. The picture was tragic. The horse was a little horse. It looked to be 3.5 to 5 years old. Imagine it still had the grass in its mouth, that is, it was eating before it found its death. “
President of the village Ampelokipi, Sotiris Sourbis was quoted as saying “I want to believe it is not a maintenance issue but it was bad timing. The Cable was cut and this accident happened. I was informed that the Electrical Company (ΔΕΗ) came after an hour of the incident. When I arrived the Electrical Company was at the scene, they had cut the power off but the horse and the dog had already passed away. Then the vet arrived. When I talked to the Electrical Company (ΔΕΗ), I was told this is one in a million. “
In the communication we had with the head of The Electrical Company of Zakynthos (ΔΕΔΔΗΕ) he did not want to be placed at the incident, however, Mr. Kardaris said that he will proceed legally against the company to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents in the future.
