Fire at Maries

Reports have come in late this afternoon of smoke at the north end of the island. It has been confirmed that a fire has broken out in the Marie’s area around Trilagada.

The fire was thought to have begun at two separate points close to each other, and they have now increased in size producing a lot of smoke. The fire department have gone to tackle the blazes and it’s been reported that there are currently twenty firefighters and ten engines at the site. They are being supported in the air by two airplanes and a helicopter.

Update – 8.30pm Greek Time

Whilst the fire is still alight, it is under control and was much smaller than the fire in that occurred at the weekend. The firefighters are still on site and we hope for some good news soon.

We have now also received some great videos from one of our members Emma Tew, of the planes doing an incredible job of helping to extinguish the fires up in the Maries area.

More news will follow when we get it.
