Greece:- Coronavirus, Concern within the big cities

Concern for Athens – Thessaloniki

Concerns about the spread of the virus exist in the big cities and specifically in Athens and Thessaloniki.

As the infectious disease specialist, Professor of the University of Athens and Member of the Committee for the Coronavirus, Nikolaos Sypsas, pointed out, the phenomenon of over-transmission should occur at any time in events where many people are crowded.

The professor of epidemiology, Athena Linou, also spoke about the spread of the coronavirus in the big urban centers, speaking to SKAI, emphasizing that the large urban centers, with forced crowding and coexistence of people, the endangered population is huge. He also pointed out that the tragedies and disasters we see in other countries are always in big cities.

In a small society, you control the situation more easily and the people at risk are fewer, said Ms. Linou.

145 active Cases.

Speaking about a “steady trend” of cases, Mr. Hardalias pointed out that at the moment there are a total of 145 active cases in the capital.

Of these, 36 are hospitalized in various hospitals in Attica, while 109 are under house arrest.
72%, at the same time, concern three specific regional units, including the center of Athens.

Regarding Thessaloniki, Mr. Hardalias clarified that today there are 66 active cases, of which only eight are hospitalized and the rest are under house arrest.

“No complacency is allowed. The increase in cases in urban centers, such as Athens and Thessaloniki, proves that the virus is still here. It feeds on every mistake we make, “he pointed out.

Alarm in Patras with 8 cases.

At the same time, there were eight new cases of coronavirus that were recorded yesterday in Patras.

Among them, a cashier in a municipal water company and his daughter who is a student abroad.

Due to his position, the waterboard employee came in contact with a lot of people. Thus, diagnostic tests were performed on all his colleagues. All 80 came out negative.

As for the 50-year-old and his daughter, both are being treated at the University General Hospital of Patras.

Nafpaktos: Three Germans with Covid-19.

Three German tourists who were vacationing in Nafpaktos were transferred to a quarantine hotel in Messolonghi.

The three men tested positive for the coronavirus and will remain for 14 days in the area designated for quarantine.

What measures are on the table of infectious disease specialist?

Apart from being mandatory the use of the mask in closed spaces.

The proposals of the Committee of Experts include, for example, a grid of restrictions on the hours or capacity of beach bars, but also on the number of guests at weddings and christenings, which have been massively postponed to August, after the restrictions of the previous period.

The escalation of proposals always includes the undesirable measure, especially for tourist destinations, ie the local “lockdown”.

Experts have set a time milestone for the review of data related to the epidemic in our country at the end of July, ie next Friday.

Scientists want the mask to be mandatory.

At the same time, the infectious disease specialist, Marios Lazanas, expressed his concern about the course of the pandemic in Greece, pointing out that “cases are increasing, especially in Attica and Thessaloniki.”

He explained that “we are in an epidemic and we must learn to live with masks and in this context is the use of the mask and other measures” adding that “people do not take the measures recommended by the state after discussions with the relevant bodies, the infectious disease specialists EODY etc and stating that the measures should be made stricter especially with the use of the mask and as WHO has stated that the vaccine will not come before 2021. “If an epidemic has to be tamed this is done only with the use of the vaccine where a number of the population will be vaccinated and will acquire antibodies “, he stated characteristically.

At the same time, he stated that there was a recommendation that the mask be used in supermarkets and people had started to relax with it and as soon as a possible fine was imposed, the measure was applied, noting that “what I do not agree with society is that there is always one that lags behind and cut corners and doesn’t hear calls to comply. “We have to limit ourselves.”

He pointed out, speaking to SKAI, that the virus circulates and is easily transmitted when we do not take action and that at the moment young people are more infected while the elderly and vulnerable groups are now protected, emphasizing that although young people are more resilient as the number of cases in them are likely to be transmitted to others and in general cases can easily increase without us realizing it.

In addition, he stressed that the mask should be used indoors because the droplets can be transmitted even in 2 aisle, eg in a supermarket. “It is not easy, it is not possible, but otherwise we do not have other precautionary measures”, he noted characteristically, while he stressed that “the mask that protects is the canvas or the surgery, the others do not protect”.

What regularity in schools depend on?

Regarding the opening of schools, he stressed that “in schools, there is a will to return to normalcy. This will depend on the epidemiological data and data coming from other countries where the schools opened normally. It seems that the children are divided into two groups. Those who are 10 to 18 and those who are under 10 years old. We will probably recommend different measures for these groups “.

Speaking about the progress on the vaccine front, but also on the drugs to fight the coronavirus, Mr. Majorkinis stated that “these are studies that need a long time, so there are no significant new data regarding drugs and vaccine. “Several vaccines have entered phase 3 and are progressing,” he said, adding that “treatments also seem to be improving, but the message has been passed on to vulnerable groups and they are being protected accordingly.” We see mainly light cases in this phase “.
