Closed schools for two weeks and distance learning courses – Why this decision was made
Schools will be closed for two weeks across the country, as announced by the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias. Students will take lessons through distance learning. The news that the infectious disease specialists suggested to close schools for two weeks was announced. In fact, at the beginning of her speech, the professor of Pediatrics – Infectious Diseases, Vana Papaevangelou, made it known that infectious disease specialists suggested that schools be closed throughout the country.
The Undersecretary of Civil Protection clarified that the final suggestion of the Committee of Infectious Diseases was accepted, who proposed to close all schools throughout the country.
Why did infectious disease specialists suggest to closed schools and re start distance learning courses?
The epidemiological burden is increasing despite the increased measures and concerns are on large cities and densely populated areas, which is why the committee of experts recommended e-learning at all levels, said Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Committee of Experts Vana Papaevangelou of coronavirus.
She said that the rolling average in the 7-day period is 2,100 new cases, the positivity index reached 4.5% and in Attica 7%. The active cases reach 20,000 and in Attica there are half of that amount. The ages at the top of the new cases are 25-55 years old, ie the people who move about. The professor made a special reference to Piraeus, which presents a special burden.
The number of patients, she said, increased to 400 daily, while in the last two days the admissions reached 500, “and this leads to a lot of pressure on the health system”. The fullness of ICU covid in Attica has reached 92%.
The good news, said Mrs. Papaevangelou, is vaccination. There is a marked reduction in hospitalizations over the age of 80 due to increased vaccination coverage, she noted. She also spoke about the AstraZeneca vaccine, stressing that there is no recommendation to stop the vaccine. According to Mrs. Papaevangelou, the dispersion is due to intermingling, so she recommended attention and strict observance of the measures.
