Lockdown: Open for discussion, no travel on weekends and closed High schools
Attica getting closer to a traffic ban from 6 pm on weekends
Cases and hospitalizations in the last 48 hours we are going through – and which expires tomorrow Friday, when it will be decided what will happen and what measures that the government may take to prevent the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The situation is difficult and the data that the infectious disease specialists will collect today, Thursday and tomorrow, Friday, will determine the next moves. With the current data, it seems that we are avoiding a horizontal lockdown, however, a number of other measures are on the table.
The government acknowledges that the increase in cases is real, but it is not exponential, which with the current data postpones a total lockdown in the country. Of course, this data changes from day to day, as the coronavirus is a dynamic phenomenon, which constantly changes the data. “The element that will judge whether we will take further measures, is the rate of change of the data we have. “Let’s be ready to adapt to these data in time”, said the government spokesman, Christos Tarantilis, leaving open any possibility for taking stricter measures.
Weekend at home from 18:00
On the table of the committee “32 experts”, the most prevalent measure that exists to be suggested, is the traffic ban on the weekend from 18:00 to 05:00 in the morning, while the suggestion for a travel ban by municipality does not seem to be likely. After all, the idea of partially shutting down retail remains visible, but probably only for the red areas and not for those with a lower epidemiological burden, although there are reactions in the commercial world as well as to government agents for the separation attempt.
The return of the pre-click away era, when only supermarkets and shops that operated under the click away regime were open. The goal of infectious disease specialists is to reduce the movement of citizens by reducing retail, in order to stop the spread that seems to have increased again, mainly in Attica but also in all the “red” areas, such as Thessaloniki and Patras. The risk for the virus to spread throughout the country has been minimized due to the ban on movement from prefecture to prefecture and as long as the measure is active, there is no reason for a nationwide lockdown. If new measures are finally taken and announced tomorrow, they will have immediate effect, most likely from the early hours of Saturday, February 6.
Suggestion to close High schools
Infectious disease specialists also bringing back to the table a “lockdown” in secondary education. That is, to keep the primary schools and kindergartens open and to close High schools again and to continue operating with distance education. The operation of hairdressers and beauty salons remains questionable, as well.
Tomorrow at 10a.m the committee will meet to discuss the data and decisions will be made and announce Friday.
