A map of the tourist recovery in Greece: Which areas are doing better?
The entrance gates of tourists in our country have opened. A crevice of optimism seems to be seen by the people of the so-called “heavy” industry, mainly in northern Greece. What is the picture of tourist traffic in the rest of the mainland, in Crete and in the Ionian Islands?
Mainland Greece.
The picturesque Pelion holds the reins of Thessaly with the region recording increasing trends in tourism. According to Costas Leventis, honorary president of the Hoteliers of Magnesia, from July 1, when the airports opened, there is an increasing trend and the number of tourists is increasing as the days go by. He explained that Pelion has small and family businesses, of which the vast majority, more than 80% have opened.

Crete.
Crete receives about 1/3 of the tourists this year compared to last year, with the municipality of Hersonissos having its honour. According to the president of Crete travel agents, Michalis Vlatakis, most tourists in the municipality of Hersonissos and the estimates speak of 20,000 visitors from July 1st. He said that August is expected to move to the level of tourist traffic, respectively, with July 2019 and September as May 2019. He also expressed the hope that there will be some traffic in October.
However, the picture in Ancient Olympia is heartbreaking, where the main “pool” of tourists is from cruises.
Ionian Islands
The lack of tourism from Britain has seriously affected the Ionian Islands, which are mainly supplied by English tourists. The dependence on the British market is great, Gerasimos Timotheatos, president of the Hoteliers of Kefalonia and Ithaca, explains to SKAI.
Zakynthos
President of the Hotel Association of Lagana, Mrs Christina Tetradi stated “things are not that good when our area is supported by at least 70% from the UK market. Laganas at the moment is looking like a period we see in May, only a few Hotels open and a few businesses with very few people.”
