Greece’s Tourism Minister, Mr Theocharis: The 5 areas for lifting restrictions for Tourism.

The Minister of Tourism, Mr. Haris Theocharis, presented the five areas that will be applied for the support and restart of Greek tourism in the Parliament, answering a topical question put forward by the KINAL MP, Mr. Frangidis.

This plan has a beginning, a middle and an end. It has a vision, it is a plan that will allow us to make this crisis the biggest opportunity of Greek tourism. Because we want to be the first in Europe to recover, the first that will inspire confidence in those who choose to come to our country, the first to take advantage of the temporary gap for the sake of quality upgrade of the tourist product so that we can re-establish ourselves through tourism as a country. Our country with this plan will be ready to take advantage of the last opportunity to have tourism worldwide and especially at European level “, said the Minister of Tourism.

During his first statement, the Minister stressed that from the first moment the pandemic broke out, there was information, cooperation, action to adapt the market and to support it in this unprecedented crisis.

A four-digit telephone number has been set up that answers the questions of the Greek hotelier, the Greek businessman, the Greek worker and anyone who has a question related to tourism.

After a marathon of cooperation with all stakeholders, hotels were left open to meet social needs but also to enable substitute teachers to offer their services to students.

With support measures for all workers, such as guides, seasonal workers, permanent employees, entrepreneurs – especially small businesses up to 20 people – but with increased liquidity through tax and other facilities, the government has helped workers and businesses.

With “Greece From Home”, a global movement, with worldwide recognition and imitators in other countries, Greece was screened all over the world.

Mr. Theocharis also referred to the international initiatives undertaken by the Ministry. Contribute to the Commission’s change of attitude, to the establishment of the voucher, to support Greek entrepreneurs as there is no possibility of liquidity to return all these advances that have already been given, to build alliances by co-signing texts with other countries. “Alliances that will be valuable the next day so that we can develop and open the borders as they should,” he said.

He also referred to Greece’s active role in the UN World Tourism Organization and the Crisis Management Team, in which, as President of the European Commission of the World Tourism Organization, they are working to take action to address the effects of the coronavirus on tourism.

During his speech, Mr. Theocharis presented the 5 areas for the next day and   Tourism.

1) Health. The Minister announced that protocols are being prepared for hotels, marinas, airplanes, yachting, etc. On May 8, the working groups of the Ministry of Tourism that are processing the protocols in cooperation with EODY will be ready to announce the protocols that will be set in consultation with the social partners.

2) Financial. Costed proposals are being prepared in collaboration with the Ministries of Finance, Development and Labour.

3) Diplomatic. “Greek tourism will be ready to welcome tourists. But if the German government, the Russian government, the Israeli government, the US government quarantine those who return from our country, then no tourists will come. No one will come for a few if they have to stay at home for two weeks afterwards. Diplomatic moves are needed. Working groups are already working with specific countries so that we can open our borders as soon as possible,” he said.

4) Promotion of the country. In the coming weeks, a new campaign will be ready, which for the first time will be able to be a national campaign, far from controversy, amateurism.

5) The Fifth area. Contacts with tour operators and international media. As Mr. Theocharis said, the CEO of TUI told Dier Spiegel that “we want to work with countries that are doing something to bring tourists back and to activate tourism, such as Greece, Portugal, Cyprus.” “.

“Our country with this plan will be ready to use the last opportunity to have tourism in the world and especially at European level. Without back and forth, without setbacks, without hesitation. Of course we will wait for the green light from them. experts and we will give the baton to the health professionals. Because the government of New Democracy puts man, values and keeps what it has said from the beginning. First, health and then everything else “, the Minister of Tourism concluded.
