156th Anniversary of the Union of the Ionian Islands with Mother Greece.
From the historic building of the Ionian Parliament, where the constant will of the representatives of the People of the Ionian Islands was forged for the Union with Mother Greece.
The Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou sent her message in regards to the 156th anniversary, which will be completed on Thursday 21st May, 2020.
Addressing the citizens of the Ionian Islands, Ms. Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou pointed out that for the Ionian Islands Region and the Regional Council, freedom, patriotism, social justice, national dignity and the dignity of the representatives of the people of the Ionian Islands are great and it was these virtues that saw the historic resolution of the Ionian Parliament, which led to the Union with the newly formed Greek state.
“With great emotion and honour I am today in this place, the sanctuary for the soul and the history of the Ionian Islands. Here within this place, the feelings of the representatives of the people of the Ionian Islands for freedom, patriotism, social justice, national dignity, these ideals that inspired the struggle of the Ionian Islands against foreign protectors, were expressed with unparalleled warmth and determination.
The Region and the Regional Council of the Ionian Islands are newly established institutions, but they have a great legacy of the political unity of the Ionian State and the Ionian Parliament. We must honour and highlight this historic legacy and serve to serve a common future with cohesion, development and prosperity for all.
In this direction, the events for the 200 years since the national polygenesis of 1821 will be an exceptional opportunity “, the Regional Governor said in her message.
For his part, the President of the Regional Council of the Ionian Islands, Nikolaos Mouzakitis, in his message for the Anniversary of May 21, 1864, stressed that today more than ever, the concept of Union acquires deeper meaning and significance, since only together can we overcome difficulties and challenges presented.
