The Regional Authority supports the creation of student dormitories on our islands.
The cooperation between the Ionian Islands Region and the Ionian University for the preparation of the study was approved.
The Regional Council approved today the cooperation between the Ionian Islands Region and the Ionian University for the elaboration of the study that will concern the construction of student centers in Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, given that the process has already started in Corfu.
The issue was discussed in the context of the 3rd amendment of the Annual Action Plan on the initiative of the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rhodes Kratsa – Tsagaropoulou, in order to launch a final solution to the huge issue of lack of housing for Ionian University students. The Regional Units have acquired university departments, but this development has not been accompanied by the corresponding housing infrastructure for students, while the tourist direction of the island’s economies makes finding housing extremely difficult and expensive.
“Student dormitories will not only facilitate the housing of students and the obligations of their families, but we hope that according to the specifications of modern studies to become real centres of student life and entertainment venues, events of substantial coexistence and hospitality,” said the Governor .
Following the decision of the Regional Council, the cooperation between the Ionian Islands Region and the Ionian University is expected for the assignment of the study, budget 24,800 Euros, to an external designer for the construction of student dormitories in the Regional Units of Lefkada, Zakynthos and Kefalonia.
In Kefalonia and Lefkada, the buildings of the student dormitories will be built on privately owned plots of the University Foundation, while in Zakynthos cases of concession of land are being discussed.
