Ionian Region:- Identification for the first time of authentic vineyard types for the Ionian Islands.

For the first time, the vineyard products from the Ionian will be identified

 

A qualitative leap for the protection of authentic agricultural products, especially the identification of vineyard varieties of the Ionian Islands, is the majority decision taken by the Regional Council of the Ionian Islands during its regular meeting held in Zakynthos.

 

The conclusion of the Draft Program Agreement between the Ionian Islands Region and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) / Laboratory of Analysis and Process Planning was approved, which, with its high knowledge and staff, undertakes to carry out the research project. Other Regions of the country are proceeding with this process, as informed by the Regional Governor.

 

For the first time in the Ionian Islands, all the necessary preparations for the identification of local agricultural products of strategic importance are underway, in accordance with the Community Regulation on Food Safety (2020), with the initiative to implement in practice a pilot research project to identify typical local wine varieties, each Ionian island and specifically Goustoulidi from Zakynthos, Robola from Kefalonia, Thiako from Ithaca, Vejamin from Lefkada and Kakotrigis from Corfu.

 

 

 

“The need to identify and distinguish our varieties is essential for their authenticity. The long-term cultivation of the vine and its great geographical spread created polymorphism due to mutations or natural and artificial crosses.

In order to ensure the conditions for the certification of these products, highly reliable identification methodologies must be applied, which can only be searched at the level of the unique genetic fingerprint, in the region of DNA inherited from the same variety / species.

The cooperation with the National Technical University of Athens, the internationally renowned educational Institution of the country, is an opportunity for our products to acquire the appropriate weapons for the position they deserve in the international market.

We respect our products and give the producers those tools in order to claim and gain their acceptance from every market in the world “, said the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa – Tsagaropoulou.

 

During the presentations of the Regional Authority, it was emphasized that “the support of local products is crucial for the viability and sustainability of each region. The economic, environmental and cultural dimension of the issue concerns us all as responsible citizens and consumers but also as competent institutions for development and job opportunities “. Taking into account the growing world trade, the creation of a special and branded product of a region, gives special quality characteristics which in turn give significant added value.
