Keri Village Hotel – post fire statement

During the terrible fires last weekend the area of Keri was hit hard, including the Keri Village and Spa hotel run by the Tsourounakis Family. Guests of the hotel were evacuated for their safety and the hotel suffered some damage. Amazingly thanks to the incredible work of the islands firefighters the hotel wasn’t destroyed.

The owners have written a press release this week about the incident which can be read in full below:

Press Release 19.09.2019, Zante Plaza Hotels Group, for the catastrophic fire on 15.09.2019

“The 15th of September will be engraved in our memory as the day that the breathing lung of the South part of Zakynthos was burnt to the ground. Thousands of acres of arable land burnt, human lives were in danger and private properties of our fellow citizens suffered irreparable damages.

We would like to inform the citizens of Zakynthos Island that we tried our best to protect the environment and the landscape apart from Keri Village & Spa by Zante Plaza (which unfortunately, suffered considerable damages) and the beautiful forest in the surrounding area which we are sadden to announce that despite the Herculean efforts of all the relevant entities involved was burnt.

The recent years and during the summer season in cooperation with the citizens of Zakynthos and the volunteers of “PEFKOS” association we kept watch over the area with customized equipped vehicles – water tanks, hoses and water pumps- put out fire outbreaks that were endangering the safety of human lives and the environment.

We would like to sincerely thank from the bottom of our hearts the public sector body entities involved and all the people who helped each and every one to avoid the loss of human lives.

More specifically:

  1. The Fire Department and the hundreds of firefighters, the Greek pilots of the firefighting aircrafts, risking their own lives to protect us, Keri Village & Spa by Zante Plaza and the homes of the Zakynthians.
  2. The Municipality of Zakynthos and its sectors, the Member of the Greek Parliament of Zakynthos and the Ionian Islands District that stood by our side from the very beginning and the community leaders of Keri Village & Agalas Village.
  3. The Greek Police force for their valuable assistance evacuating the Hotel’s premises and the Keri Village.
  4. The Hospitality Associations of Zakynthos, our fellow Hoteliers and their workforce for their valuable assistance regarding the relocation of our Guests. A big thank you to all of those who managed to provide their Hospitality to our Guests and to those who tried but couldn’t.
  5. All of our valuable Partners, Tour Operators, locals & International and their workforce for their understanding and their valuable help in so many  levels.
  6. A big thank you to all of our Staff in Keri Village & Spa by Zante Plaza who during the time of distress acted bravely and calmly in order to protect our Guests endangering their own lives and fought the firing flames till the end and protected Keri Village & Spa by Zante Plaza like their own. We would also like to thank all the Staff in Zante Plaza Hotels Group for their kind assistance.
  7. The volunteers and the citizens of Keri Village that fought bravely the burning flames.
  8. All of our friends in Zakynthos Island and all over Greece for their touching messages, the 120 Guests of Keri Village & Spa by Zante Plaza who were staying in the Hotel at the time for their cooperation and their understanding for their love and support.

We would like to announce that from the beginning of October we commit to work on all the necessary moving parts for the restoration of the natural beauty of the area and we invite everyone to take part and support the strategic plan for the reforestation of the area that we are working on. In addition, we have faith that the State will support our efforts and all the public sector body entities involved.”
