Lockdown:- All schools, how education programmes will operate.

The suspension of all primary schools was announced by the Minister of Education on Saturday afternoon.

The suspension of operation of primary schools until November 30, was announced by the Minister of Education, Nikis Kerameos and the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias, in order to limit the spread of the new coronavirus.

“From Monday, November 16 and for two weeks, the operation of primary education structures throughout the country is suspended at educational facilities. Kindergartens and Primary schools remain closed, as well as the country’s junior and senior High, until November 27.

“The schools of special education and training of all levels will remain open”, said Mrs. Kerameos.

Distance education in Primary Education.

In two ways, complementary to each other, young students will continue their lessons: with educational television and modern e-learning.

– Educational television

From the morning of Monday, November 16, 2020, at 9 a.m. broadcasting on ERT2 TV will start for lessons for primary school students. The program of these courses will be announced tomorrow, Sunday.

– Modern distance education

From next Monday as well, the management of each school in collaboration with the teachers, will prepare a modern distance learning program and will make the necessary tests. According to the Minister of Education, the distance learning will start on Wednesday, after the school holiday of November 17.

Distance education will be compulsory, each teaching hour will last 30 minutes -after a relevant suggestion of the Institute of Educational Policy- and will take place from 14:00 to 17:00 for primary schools, and 14:00 to 16:20 for kindergartens, including short, ten-minute breaks.

According to Ms. Kerameos, the lunch / afternoon hours were chosen for two main reasons: on the one hand, to make it easier for families, either because they have older children who will have distance education in the morning or because their parents work remotely, and also everyone uses devices for distance work or education, on the other hand to limit the simultaneous use of all networks by pupils, students, employees and so on.

Instructions will be sent today to all primary schools and kindergartens in the country, to be followed by two days of adjustment, before the start of digital lessons on Wednesday.

It is reminded that, as long as someone connects to the platforms used by the ministry for e-learning, there will be no data charge. It is also possible to connect to the distance learning platform and via landline with local charge.

Ms. Kerameos added that since March, the Ministry of Education has been sending technological equipment to schools, through significant European funds and donations.
