A NATO military helicopter crashed west of Kefalonia outside the Flight Information Region Athens. Its wreckage has been found, but the fate of the crew is unknown.
According to IONIAN TV, the Canadian military helicopter was in the area due to NATO exercises, while it has crashed west of Kefalonia but outside the FIR of Athens. The wreckage of the helicopter has been found and the crew of three to six people are being searched for.
According to IONIAN TV, one of the six members of the NATO helicopter, who went missing from the radar off the coast of Kefalonia, has been found dead.
The helicopter’s signal was lost by radar about 85km from Kefalonia and within the FIR area of Rome.
The helicopter belongs to the force of the Canadian frigate Fredericton, from which it had taken off and was patrolling. The frigate is part of NATO’s permanent naval force SNMG2, which is patrolling the western area of the Mediterranean.
According to the Associated Press, the Greek authorities said their assistance was not requested, as the area is far from the Greek coast and does not fall within their jurisdiction for search and rescue operations.
However, the Port Police of Zakynthos is on alert for any necessary intervention.
