Zakynthos:- New fines given to the waste management plant in Liva.

Fines for violation of the environmental legislation are confirmed once again in relation to the operation of the temporary management of waste treatment in Liva. The violations are confirmed this time not only to the Solid Waste Management Agency of Zakynthos, which has now been abolished but also the company MES who has taken over the management of the Unit and as it is already known will continue to manage it until the completion of the work of OEDA.

It is worth noting that the violations were confirmed by the Environmental Protection Control Unit of our region after an inspection carried out in the area in the summer of 2020, following a relevant document of the Magistrate Court – Criminal Court of Zakynthos. The autopsy of the unit revealed a series of violations such as the operation of the space outside the licensing time, the packing of recyclable materials and the lack of shelter.

Fines given to FODSA but also the company that manages the unit

In particular, a total fine of 11,000 euros was confirmed to FODSA Zakynthos, regarding the operation of the Zakynthos Waste Transitional Management Unit is out of the licensing time, regarding the non-asphalting of the access road to the Transitional Management Unit, housing of all the machinery of the unit, regarding the non-construction of a perimeter drainage collection ditch in the composting area as well as an underground drainage collection tank, regarding the non-posting in the area of an approved fire protection study by the competent fire service.

We repeat the above that was found last July and what should be emphasized is that in the meantime the access road has been asphalted, while the fire protection study approved by the Fire Service of Zakynthos has been secured.

For some time now, with the complete abolition of FODSA Zakynthos, the area has been transferred to the responsibility of the new inter-regional Regional Waste Management Agency, however the payment of fines seems to be borne by the Municipality and not the new Agency.

As mentioned above, a fine is imposed on the contractor company MESOGEIOS SA, regarding incomplete waste sorting process at the K.K.D.A.Y resulting in the packaging of recyclable materials which should have been sorted.

Finally, it is worth noting that on the issue of the operation of the unit in Liva, the combination of the People’s Rally has asked the Regional Governor for information “on the problems of infection and fire safety in the waste management area in Liva, Zakynthos”

The question that was to be discussed at the next meeting of the Regional Council will be withdrawn if the issue of the interdisciplinary FODSA is introduced as expected.
