New fire chief took his position in Zakynthos

With a positive attitude and appetite for work, the new Commander of the Fire Service of the Prefecture of Zakynthos officially took over his duties last Friday. Pyrarch Spyros Pavlogeorgatos came to take his place from the former Governor Christos Kalogeropoulos, who was transferred as Prefecture Governor in Etoloakarnania.
The new commander of the Fire Department of Zakynthos pledged from the first moment to work hard to protect our island.  He showed  his willingness to offer his services and to continue the good work that has been done all these years in the service.
On the first day that he took office, Mr. Pavlogeorgatos had meetings with the Deputy Regional Governor of Zakynthos George Stasinopoulos, the Mayor of Zakynthos Nikitas Aretakis, the Police Director Theodoros Tsatsaris, the Commander A. Zakynthos Sotiris Siatis, the Port Authority of Zakynthos Evangelos Tzourtzos and the Director of the electricty distribution network Zakynthos Nikos Koutsis.

Statement to the Press

“I will do the best I can for Zakynthos”

“This is the second time I am on official business on the island of Zakynthos. The first time was in extinguishing the fires in 2017 and I had sat for about five days under the administration of Mr. Stempilis then. I had come as the leader of a team from the Headquarters I was serving at the time. I have a first taste of big fires on the island “.

Mr. Pavlogeorgatos stressed that Zakynthos is a demanding island with a large forest area, while he stressed that the goal is for the Service to be ready when the fire season begins.

“It is a difficult and demanding island. It has a large forest area. I haven’t had time to turn it all around. This will be done as well. We also have a period until the fire-fighting season to prepare and organize better and in cooperation with the local bodies and the citizens we will try to have a smooth fire-fighting period. I am sure of their cooperation and I will do my best for the island “.

The new Commander of  Zakynthos was even informed by its predecessor about cases of fires that occurred last summer.

“My predecessor told me some things. There were some cases of fires. If I remember correctly only one fire towards the end of the fire season in October was big in the Shipwreck. It was a fire with a lot of wind and difficult conditions “.

In fact, Mr. Pavlogeorgatos mentioned the extreme weather phenomena that afflict the island in addition to the fires that are the main problem every summer.

“It is definitely a difficult island and every year it has various events, mainly fires, without excluding extreme weather phenomena. We also have the issue of the pandemic and we must contribute as much as we can from our side “.

“I wish everyone a happy new year. I am optimistic and have remarkable staff. I am still at the level of acquaintance, but we have remarkable firefighters. We expect further reinforcement from the transfers. I believe we will be in a good place at the beginning of the firefighting period and then step by step we will see the improvement of the situation “.
