The fire took place within the building of the waste management centre for recycling at around 9.00p.m. At the same time the new council was being sworn in at Solomos Square. As soon as the new mayor heard of the fire out break he rushed to the scene along with other delegates and local member of parliament, Mr Dionsiois Aktypis in an effort to help.
The Mayor himself said the fire’s cause was purely arson. “I saw it with my own eyes, there were three to four fires within the building. This time in the evening how could there be a fire? It has been hotter during the day with higher temperatures and we never had anything, and now at night? It happened straight after my speech.
The Member of Parliament
Mr. Dionysios Aktypis also stated the they had warned the area was extremely dangerous. He continued by saying, “Even before the elections I stated that this type of image is not the type of image that Zakynthos deserves. And so close to the airport. We also stated that it was an extremely dangerous situation here due to the piles of uncontrolled rubbish that has accumulated in the area. The fears of this happening have now been proven unfortunately tonight.
Our next step is to check what damage there is to the building and machinery, what has been left to salvage”. Mr. Aktypis on his part hopes that there are no problems for continual waste management to an issue already plagued with problems.
The Governor of the Ionian Islands
Mrs Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou, stated that “investigations will take place. Due to the quick response of our fire department avoided the worst”. Patrols will also take place around the waste management system in Liva. “We have our suspicions on tonight’s fire, therefore we have also imposed a patrol around Liva. Apart at looking at what damage there is from tonight’s fire, we will also have to take into consideration if the building is appropriate for anti fire requirements. Avoiding such events in the future, not only this building but all buildings!”
The Deputy Regional Governor of Zakynthos
Mr. George Stasinopoulos also commented on the tragic event. “It is a difficult situation, the Fire Department will have to evaluate the situation, we have to be alert. We already have notified the police department to patrol the area of Live, so as not to have another similar situations. I regard this not as arson, or rather hope that it isn’t arson as you would understand it would take this situation to other investigations needed.
As of today other measures will be in place in regards to protection of the area. Mr. Stasinopoulos emphasized the fact that the quick action of our fire department saved a worst case scenario. “We would be talking about a fire catastrophe in Zakynthos, if it wasn’t for our fire department”.
