As cases of COVID-19 reach to an amount of 495 with 8 deaths in total across Greece, stricter measures have been put in place.
Measures to minimize passenger travel to the islands have been announced by the Minister of Maritime and Islands Policy, Mr. Yiannis Plakiotakis. Among them the ban on moving to the islands of non-residents.
New measures will come into force starting at 06.00a.m
From tomorrow Saturday 21st March, 2020,
- Permanent residents will only be allowed to travel to the islands. To get a ticket you need to show your tax return or resident’s permit. (beige card for non-Greeks). For those who are not residents they will be turned back to where they came from. (Eg. Someone living in Athens travel to Zakynthos, they will not be allowed to board the ferry, they will be turned back at his own expense.)
- Sailing of private pleasure boats is prohibited. ( Eg. no touring around the Island with your boat or hopping across to Kefalonia)
- All Saturday markets ( λαϊκές) will be closed.
As of Monday, 23rd March,2020
- The popular markets ( λαϊκές ) will be open on a 50% basis of its sellers.
- Supermarkets will now have one customer per 15 meters instead of the 10 meters currently in force.
- One person per 15 sq.m. now in supermarkets.
- All public gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibite
The Government has also announced that if measures are not complied to there will be severe penalties. Police will be patrolling areas where it is known that people congregate, such as squares, parks and beach areas. The motto this weekend is we STAY HOME!
