New TV Series about Zakynthos, but is it really what the island needs?

It’s been announced today that a new TV series about Zakynthos will be filmed this summer called Once Upon a Time in Zante. The series is being described as another “Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents,” that was made by the BBC and aired for several years.

Commissioned by Channel 4, the documentary will run for six episodes and follow a group of youngsters from the UK as they return to Zakynthos after the pandemic and enjoy a holiday in the sun. The programme’s being described as one that will help a generation celebrate their freedom after being locked down during the pandemic. The programme also hopes to highlight locals on the island who’ve been waiting for the island to open up again.

Channel 4 describe it as “An exuberant celebration of the classic British ‘rite of passage’ holiday as this group of young people experience the joy of socialising again as restrictions relax in the summer of 2021.”

A programme spokesperson said “With the world slowly opening up, Once Upon a Time In Zante will give a unique view of young people as they find their feet and try to get to grips with their “new normal. Having missed out on so much over the past year or so, it will be great to see how their attitudes towards this rite of passage holiday might have changed, or will they simply be out in the Med desperate for sun, sea and normality. After what these kids have missed out on this summer means so much – we’ll be celebrating this with all of the wit and style that Channel 4 docs are known for.”

The news that another of these programmes will be made and aired has frustrated and upset island residents and businesses. There are so many positive aspects of the island that could be focused on and make a good documentary. It seems however that once again people don’t see the island of Zakynthos – with its amazing history, hospitality and sights – as a whole, but merely one big road of party-centric clubs for the young. It’s a timely reminder that Zakynthos is not a Greek Party Island.

It’ll also be interesting to see how the news rules announced today will factor into this filming:
