The UK press reported yesterday that the UK Government were looking at adopting “air bridges” to low risk countries, with no quarantine upon return, in order to allow UK travellers to visit certain holiday destinations.
A source in the government told the press “It’s [airbridge] a potential option but not current government policy”
Last night however, the UK Government said they will not currently adopt the airbridge idea, which Greece was reported to be in favour of, saying: “‘air bridges’ idea would not be part of the quarantine proposals. The quarantine rules will be reviewed every three weeks but I think people would be unwise to book a foreign holiday in the expectation that an ‘air bridge’ will open up in time for the summer holidays. It’s the sort of idea you might look at as you exit a quarantine system. But we are just getting started.”
UK Government ministers are likely to reveal quarantine plans For the UK tomorrow and how they will work. Which will likely include the requirement for travellers to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival back to UK.
This is a hard blow for tourism, especially for us as an island. Zakynthos businesses and residents rely heavily on UK tourists, and are really looking forward to seeing everyone again this year. Unfortunately for now however, it looks as though any UK tourists to foreign destinations will be adopting 14 day quarantine on return from holidays abroad, with a £1000 fine if caught breaching quarantine. Some positive news as stated above however, is that the quarantine rule will be reviewed by the government every three weeks. So we hope there may still be some good for some travellers. We keep our fingers crossed!
