Mantolato (Nougat)
A traditional sweet of Zakynthos, and definitely a must to try!
During Carnival the most popular sweets are Rice pudding(rizogalo) and nougat (Mantolato).
Now that the events are slowly taking place throughout the town and villages you will mainly see nougat being thrown to the crowds as a treat. I always remember my father diving his teeth into the Zakynthian Mantolato when he was here, being an expert in nougat delights, he has always praised the Zakynthian ones.
Zakynthians throughout the period of the Triodon will buy packets of nougat and all will be shared amongst each other, even during the last parade ofCarnival, floats making their way down the main street will have these delicious treats handy to be thrown out over the crowds as they make their way down. It is a tradition that has been passed on from generations to generations and is still kept alive today,during the Zakynthian Carnival.
Nougat having its roots set way back in the 15th century where in the Venetian town of Cologna Veneta, produced a type of mantolato or (mandorle in Italian, )we see in Zakynthos. Our Mantolato, has always been based on honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds but with a different taste and harder to bite compared to others.
