Number of Flu death toll in Greece climbs to 74

Seventy four people have died in Greece due to complications after been infected with the flu virus. In its weekly bulletin, Greece’ Disease Control and Prevention Center KEELPNO said that eighteen people succumbed in the week 11-17 February 2019.

Among the latest victims is a 55-year-old woman who died on the island of Crete on Wednesday, following complications after infection with flu type A-H1N1.

Of the 74 dead, 40 were men and 25 women with an average age of 68 years.

The overwhelming majority  – 97.3% or 72 people – were contracted with flu virus Type A and 2.7% or 2 people with Type B.

For one more time the KEELPNO urge the population to get flu vaccination, stressing that the flu season reaches its peak in the months of February and March.

Greece imported about 2.2 million flu vaccines since the beginning of the flu season in autumn 2018, and another 50,000 in the past two weeks.

According to KEELPNO data, 42 people died during the flu season 2017-2018 and 108 during 2016-2017.
