Oil slick in Tsilivi.

Reports of an oil slick at both ends of the beach in Tsilivi caused alarm today.

Just after 13.30 Zakynthos Informer received a comments for approval, that visitors had just come off the beach and were covered in oil.

As Zakynthos Informer did not want to post such a comment without investigating the facts first, we immediately got in touch with a hotel owner in the area.

Mrs Maria Theocharous, from Sentido Alexandra Breach Hotel, had not heard of anything at that time. Concerned, she immediately got in touch with the village president. The president then organised a team to check Tsilivi beaches in several different areas.

Areas checked were Kampitisi, Mango, Yakinthos, Al Mare, Tsilivi Port, Avgoustinos Taverna and Bouka beach. The results of the checks were that all beaches were clean. No sign of oil slicks apart from a small concentrated area on Bouka beach.

“As soon as Zakynthos Informer notified us, we notified the president of Tsilivi Mr Dionysios Giakoumelos that there could be a possible oil slick. He then took a team of peolple to investigate, “Mrs Theocharous stated.

Due to high winds Mr Giakoumelos stated that “ the oil slick has possibly come from a tanker or ship, and the winds carried it to our shores. Although only a slight amount, it did cause problems to some swimming in the area. It is not very often this type of Marine Pollution occurs on our shores, but today due to the high winds it seems it could not be avoided.”

Thanks to the President of Tsilivi and members of the Hotel Sentido Alexandra Beach Resort, the oil slick has now been cleaned up and the beach is back to normal.
