Over 1,500 compalints of smoking to 1142 within 2 weeks of operation.

A lit cigarette inside a… bus in Corfu, a train station in Attica, also in a theatre in Athens. These may seem like scenes from another decade, but they are of today and are just some of the complaints staff at «1142» has heard.

Greek society, despite the fact that there are still incomprehensible “law breakers” as in the above cases, has “embraced” the anti-smoking law measures. Only two weeks into its universal application in all indoor and some outdoor areas there has been a notable difference.

According to figures available by the Sunday Free Press the line “1142” for its two-week run, up to last Wednesday, a total of 1,534 complaints of antitrust violations have been made. Some of the complaints come as a big surprise such as transport, workplaces, public services and more. Where they thought lighting a cigarette was the exception. That is, the law basically did not apply to health care stores, such as cafes, bars, restaurants, nightclubs. And yet, “1142” has even received a complaint about Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, a place where smoking is strictly prohibited.

What seems to change, however, in addition to the desire of Greeks, smokers and non-smokers, to apply the legislation to all public areas, is that citizens are starting to think about curbing or even quitting the harmful habit of smoking. It is no coincidence that “1142” has received 346 smoking cessation requests in the last two weeks. In addition, according to data available on Sunday’s “ET”, 1,187 people have requested general information on the anti-smoking law. At the same time, for these two weeks, up to Wednesday, 526 calls were not completed, 377 people closed the line before talking to a spokesman, and 300 calls were in regards to other cases.

The universal implementation of the anti-smoking law was one of the first priorities of the government in the field of health. This was a key pillar of the New Democracy program. The goal, after all, is to reduce the smoking rate by 25% by 2025
