Tomorrow in Zakynthos, the day is not only known to Zakynthians as ‘The prodgial Son’ but most would call it Pig Sunday.
The name is derived from the Byzantine era, when people would prepare their pigs for slaughter, as meat was allowed to be consumed before the stricter Lent period.
Then, it was common to see the people consume meat all through this week, however for those who keep strict tradition these days will fast on Wednesdays and Fridays in order to prepare for ‘Great Lent’.
The tradition had it, that the announcement of Pig Sunday or start of pre lent would be trumpeted through the town. This gave the people plenty of time to slaughter their pigs in order to celebrate the weeks ahead. Tomorrow a traditional dish throughout Zakynthos, is of course Pork, usually roasted flavoured with rosemary and served with Zakynthian style potatoes.
