PM Tsipras to call for snap elections after 2. round of regional & local elections

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that he will ask the President of the Republic to declare snap elections after the second round of local and regional elections scheduled for June 2, 2019.

“I I will not ignore the election results nor chose the easy way and remain true to leftist ethics,” Tsipras said adding that he will continue the struggle for “equality, and social solidarity.”

He did not elaborate on the date of the snap elections, analysts tip on June 30, 2019.

He consulted with party officials with some of them to urge him to early elections. He made the announcement from SYRIZA headquarters

The Prime Minister’s statement Sunday midnight comes two hours after the official results for the European elections that recorded a sweeping victory for conservative New Democracy leading with a margin of 9% towards SYRIZA.

Short after the results were announced, ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis had urged Tsipras to resign and call for early elections.

Will Tsipras manage to close the gap in the parliamentary elections? He will need to to address the problems of the middle classes, which he ignored in his package of benefits for just a few groups of the society.
