EOF President Speaks to ERT about Chloroquine Active Drug Production in our Country
“Chloroquine-based drug production that can be used under conditions of coronavirus treatment has begun in Greece,” said Dimitris Filippou, chairman of the National Medicines Agency (EOF), speaking to ERT on Thursday afternoon.
Mr Philippou even estimated that the drug would probably become available tomorrow, Friday, and noted: “Chloroquine is a drug that has been tested and early results suggest it may have a positive effect on patients with coronavirus infection.” “This is a proven drug used in the treatment of malaria and now in experimental and in the coronavirus because of studies showing efficacy. Its production had dropped significantly due to the eradication of malaria, “he said.
Asked if a quantity of chloroquine has been committed in Greece, Mr Filippou answered in the negative and explained that it had been imported from a Greek pharmaceutical industry. “A quantity has come to Greece from the Greek pharmaceutical industry and the production of medicine has started in Greece. We carried 5 tons. It is a quantity that I think is sufficient to meet the needs in our country and most likely neighbouring countries if needed, ”he said.
Asked by a journalist if it is a “Greek drug for coronavirus”, Mr Philippos hastened to point out: “It is a drug that has been used successfully in the past. We have not developed a drug. It is simply a medicine we have the potential to produce in Greece and is used in the treatment of coronavirus.
He estimated that the drug “will be available on the market tomorrow and explained that it will go to hospitals” as well. Then, as he pointed out, the administration and treatment of patients with coronavirus will be based on the instructions of the infectious agents.
