Primary – Kindergartens to open: How will students return – How long will they remain open?

As announced, primary schools and kindergartens will remain open until June 26. At the same time, it was clarified that at present the all-day schools will not be operational.

– In total, for teachers, the end of the school year will be June 30. For substitute teachers, their contracts will be extended until June 30.

– School and kindergarten departments will operate with up to 15 students at a time and with a distance of 1.5 meters on the desks, which will have the same orientation. If the students exceed 15, then the department will be divided into 2 sub-departments, and will operate in rotation, Monday-Wednesday-Friday one, Tuesday-Thursday the other, and next week the opposite. If the students do not exceed 15, then the class will be open daily.

– There will be antiseptics in the rooms, cleaning is provided twice a day, both during the operation of the school and after that.

– breaks are provided at different times

– It is prohibited to operate canteens

– the use of a mask in both schools and school buses is optional.

According to Ms. Kerameos, the decision to reopen primary schools, kindergartens and nurseries was based on the following factors:

  • On the unanimous proposal of the experts of the Ministry of Health. The suggestion is related to the downward course of the epidemic, to the fact that children get and transmit less, to the fact that our weather is improving with higher temperatures on the rise.

  • The overall de-escalation has started smoothly. Examples are the measures in The Senior High and High schools.

  • We must ensure the return of students to their physical space. Long-term absence makes their psychosocial development difficult. There can be no normalcy without open schools

  • Children are safer in schools where they follow rules as opposed to what happens outside

  • Open schools reduce social inequalities and empower children from more vulnerable social environments

  • For special schools, the students who study there have a special need to be in this environment for their learning development and their psychological development.

Theodorikakos: How will kindergartens and nurseries operate from June 1?

Today is the first day that restaurants are working and they have been given the opportunity to expand the public space they occupy in order to keep their turnover, while maintaining security measures, said the Minister of Interior, Takis Theodorikakos.

Because the first concern is the support of employees and businesses, that’s why we give the right to municipalities to reduce municipal fees, he said, emphasizing the government’s cooperation with local government authorities. Mr. Theodorikakos announced the measures operating kindergartens and nurseries, opening from June 1. The rules are exactly the same as the rules that apply to elementary schools, meaning that the rooms will accommodate up to 15 children in each room. If the number is less than 15, then they will be able to operate on a daily basis, he noted.

Special care has been taken for the cleanliness of the premises, as Mr. Theodorikakos clarified, while special care has been taken for emergency recruitment, if deemed necessary.

Mr. Theodorikakos clarified that KAPI remains closed.

Municipal nurseries and kindergartens will be open until July 31. For summer camps, the final proposal of the experts has been requested within the next week, in order to make the final decisions.

As for the operation of the State, it continues normally, with the exception of employees belonging to vulnerable groups.

Finally, regarding the special purpose permit, the Minister of Interior clarified that its granting will continue in case their children do not fall into the daily program of attending school classes.
