Member of Parliament of Zakynthos, Mr. Dionysios Aktypis gave his first speech at the meeting of the Special Standing Committee for the Environment.
The meeting in which he handed over his proposals took place yesterday. In a discussion with the committee, programmed talks on environmental problems and the possible “Planning the Commission’s work” in the near future took place.
During his speech, not only did he address the problems Zakynthos has but also issues that concern all of Greece.
Mentioning the problems we face during the summer months in regards to fire. Also, the fact that 15% of our problems is due to deforestation. Combating these problems, rules and regulations, should also follow, he stated. He also went on to talk about the problems Zakynthos is facing. Our waste management system and the negative effects it has on tourism. Stating the fact that not only does it have a negative impact on Zakynthos but on the whole of Greece. Zakynthos being a top tourist destination is trying to deal with their waste problems for over 19 years, he said. Our Island still needs at least two to three years to overcome completely the problems we are facing.
The issue of drinking water, also addressed at the meeting and the need for improvements will be discussed at other departments within the Government. Water, he said we have. However, we are unable to give quality drinking water without facilities to supply it to all the homes in Zakynthos.
Marine pollution, blue flags and the issue of exploiting fossil fuels in our area was also mentioned. Emphasizing on the fact that issue has become an important one and has great concern within our local communities. Pointing out the fact that our area is well known for seismic activity, the issue should be addressed carefully without ruling out possibilities for development, but should be looked at carefully and under certain rules and regulations.
Finally, he finished his speech that environmental problems we may face would have an effect on the planet as a whole. We should address each problem with the idea that it leads to solving problems concerning our environment and the planet as a whole. Giving examples of other areas who have problems but as yet in Zakynthos we have to face. Climate change has brought with it new difficulties and that we should all work together in facing these challenges and solving problems.
