Recycling to start at 5 councils… Unfortunately, Zakynthos was left out.

A reciprocal recycling program launched in five municipalities with the initiative of Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakou. Those who choose to recycle in the “recycling huts” that will be located in central Kallithea and Nea Smyrni in the Attica region, but also in Nafplio, Ioannina and Andros will receive three cents for each pack of paper, glass or aluminium, other metal and plastic that will be disposed of in special bins. Or else 1 euro for every 33 packs, a voucher that can then be recycled by redundant citizens in affiliated supermarkets. Initially, 10 recycling houses will be located in each of the five municipalities – Kalithea, Nea Smyrni, Ioannina, Andros and Nafplio – that will be part of the program.

Already, a recycling house has been placed in the interior ministry building at 33 Vasilissis Sofia St. in Athens . The “recycling huts ” does not just collect recyclables but also processes them locally. A special cutter cuts the plastic bottles, another machine squeezes the aluminium, and another shatters the glass.

The great advantage of this initiative is that the quantities that will be recycled to the homes will then be immediately recycled as clean materials and re-sold. And, moreover, the citizens who will transfer the recyclables to the recycling huts will benefit from the first moment, since they will be able to exchange rewards in euros with products selected from the supermarkets participating in the program.

“The initiative is important because it will divert packaging from common waste, producing clean materials that will be marketed immediately. It is also important that the National Technical University of Athens will certify the quantities collected and evaluate the overall benefits of separately sorting and disposing, using state-of-the-art equipment, processing materials at source, reducing their volume at the collection point and sorting out, ”said George Kremlis, adviser to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The materials collected in the recycling huts would have ended up in Filis and the rest of the Landfill areas – it is noted that Andros does not even have a landfill – while municipalities would pay an entry fee of about € 45 per tonne of dumped waste, which will increase to € 70 per tonne from 1/1/2020 and of course this cost will have to be passed on to the public.

The new Ministry of Interior’s Packaging Recycling Program – which will be gradually expanded to the Attica Region – is expected to extend the life of the Landfill of Filis, which is needed until new management modes are found and some new biogas plants are developed, such as gas production, and good quality compost from bio-waste.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself gave the example of an extension to improve recycling methods by installing separate bins for the four streams (plastic, metal, glass, paper) at Megaro Maximos. The message the Prime Minister posted on Twitter is as follows:

“In a symbolic move, we started with us: Recycling bins have already been installed at Megaro Maximos. We have to do the same in our neighbourhoods, in our homes. This will ultimately benefit the whole of society. ”
