Rouvikonas anarchists vandalize Greek Parliament for the sake of 17. Nov convict

Some 30 members of the anarchist group Rouvikonas threw red paint at the Greek Parliament at Tuesday noon in solidarity with 17. November convict Dimitris Koufontinas.

The group attacked at Parliament around 2 o’ clock Tuesday afternoon. The group walked up the stairs from the Monument of Unknown Soldier, threw bottles with red paint, fired two smoke flares and fled the scene.

The Speaker of the Parliament Nikos Voutsis described the vandalism as “”undemocratic and unacceptable.” He said further that the Parliament guards removed the group from the area.

According to unconfirmed reports, the guards and the anarchists were involved in a scuffle.

One person has been reportedly detained, he is currently in the headquarters of the Greek Police in Athens where he is interrogated with police trying to find out whether the person was involved in the vandalism.

Short after the attack, Rouvikonas claimed responsibility saying it was “activism” for the sake of Dimitris Koufontinas, the top gun of terror organization 17. Novemmber, who has been sentenced 11 times to life imprisonment.

He is in hunger strike since May 2, after a court in Volos rejected his request for a furlough.Ever since he went on hunger strike, anarchists have been continuously attacking public buildings as well as the offices of ruling SYRIZA as well as Ne Democracy in several cities, including Athens and Thessaloniki.

The Greek Supreme Court is expected to review the Volos court decision today.

The attack triggered an outrage especially among opposition parties.

‘A handful of people ridicules the state of SYRIZA and shames Greeks. We are a few days before the elections. Stop being incapable and get them!” wrote ND MP Vassilis Kikilias.

Main opposition New Democrasy and other MPs accused the government and the political leadership of the Police of tolerating attacks staged by Rouvikonas.

The attack took place in front of the eyes of stunned tourists visiting the Monument.
