Saint Dionysios’ celebrations programme 2019

Celebrations will begin from Friday 23rd and will continue up until Monday, August 26th, 2019.

Zakynthos celebrates with all solemnity the Transfiguration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Protector and Patriarch of Saint Dionysios.

Programme.

Friday, August 23, 2019

11.00a.m The announcement that Holy celebrations begin. A zakynthian tradition is a “SENIO.” You will hear cannons fired, whilst church bells chime. Meanwhile, across the Island you will also hear gunshots. This is a traditional announcement for Zakynthians that their Saint is among the people.  We would advise anyone who has pets that are sensitive to noise to take necessary precautions.

19:00p.m The official Ascension by the Archbishop of Zakynthos from the Holy Monastery to the Holy Temple. Immediately afterwards, a Doxology will follow. A ceremony of the sepulchre of Saint Dionysios within the Temple. The Grand Vespers will then follow.

Saturday, August 24, 2019, at 02.00a.m

Readings from Holy scriptures in honour of our Saint.

At 07:30a.m.

The Orthodox Sequence will begin.  The performance of The Divine Liturgy takes place.

On the same day, at 19:30p.m.  The Divine Liturgy of St. Dionysios will take place within the town. The Litany parade will go through Zakynthos town. ALL roads where the Litany takes place will be closed prior.

Monday, August 26, 2019, at 08:30

The Service within the church will begin for preparation of the Saint’s return to His Holy Larnaca.

11.00a.m The commemoration of St. Dionysios’ sepulcher ends within the Holy Temple. Priests will then place Saint Dionysios in the Holy Larnaca.

The Zakynthian Philharmonic marching band will announce the celebrations, playing along the coastal avenue.

The Sacred Procession (Litany), will be organized outside the Temple. A commemoration event   by the 117th Air Force Battle Wing, the Zakynthos Municipal Philharmonic marching band and representatives from Alykes and Artemisia Municipalities, Scouts and Guides, Civic Offices and other Delegations.

*** note:- During these celebration the Saint Dionysios market will also be open. The markets are located near Saint Dionysios church within the harbour facilities.
