Schools; what happens if a coronavirus case is confirmed?

EODY has issued a detailed protocol for schools and cases of coronavirus. According to EODY, each school unit must appoint a coronavirus manager and a deputy.

The person in charge of coronavirus management of each school unit must do the following:

  • informs and trains staff on the timely identification and management of suspected cases of coronavirus infection,
  • is responsible for communicating with the children’s families, the relevant Directorate of Education, the Directorate of Public Health and Social Welfare of the relevant Regional Unit. The above Directorates communicate with EODY and the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, as the body responsible for tracking contacts, is informed about the current instructions on coronavirus issues in schools and their treatment,
  • is responsible for keeping a record of absences related to coronavirus-compatible symptoms for students and staff and for monitoring their performance of a coronavirus diagnostic test (if recommended by a physician) and its outcome;
  • forms a list of people in the Department of the school class, where the case occurred and provides relevant information to the contact tracker,
  • is responsible for the configuration, equipment and operation of the predetermined isolation area of an incident that exhibits coronavirus-compatible symptoms at school.

The Ministry of Education has issued a guide to parents, students and teachers of schools that are closing, such as the 6 schools that remain closed on the mainland due to confirmed cases of coronavirus.

According to the Ministry of Education, the moment the operation of a school unit is suspended, the “tool” of distance education will be activated at the same time.

The relevant ministerial decision stipulates that, as long as the risk of spreading the coronavirus remains, the primary and secondary schools are obliged to provide modern distance education to students who will not be able to attend the educational process in person, as follows:

If their department or school unit is suspended, modern distance education is provided, where both teachers and students participate exclusively in the educational process.

If some students are justifiably absent due to coronavirus, simultaneous modern distance education is provided to students who participate in the course with physical presence and to those who cannot attend the educational process with physical presence. In particular, if students are absent because they belong to a high-risk group or live with a person who is infected with coronavirus, remote attendance is mandatory.

In the event that the simultaneous modern distance learning becomes difficult to implement, the possibility of forming “online departments”, in which both the teacher and the students participate exclusively from outside, distance learning is also provided under certain conditions for students belonging to high-risk groups.  These can be made up of either students only of the specific school unit or different school units, per class and per lesson.
