Seismic activity continuing

Lots of seismic activity has been felt over the last few days, leading to the fact that residents are now concerned as to what may be happening in our area. For this reason a meeting with the Emergency Services Coordinator , in the presence of  Mr. Giannis Kopanas, a Dr. of Physics and Earthquake Research, at the Town Hall of Zakynthos was held in order to re-inform them.

What was perceived at the meeting was that the post-seismic sequence is still in progress, something that our residents should be patient with as the sequence continues to do what Mother Nature intends it to do. . At the same time, we should be aware, regardless of whether or not earthquakes happen, because, as Mr. Kopanas pointed out, Zakynthos is a seismic island and there is always such a possibility. He referred to how the post-earthquake activity evolved after the earthquake of October 26th, and he also stood in the fact that we feel them particularly since there is a slight shift towards the hinterland.

Status extension

State of Emergency

In addition the Mayor P. Kolokotsas along with representatives of the Police, the Port Authority and the Fire Brigade, present to application to the District Protection Officer of the Region M. Mouzakis, in reference to a request for an extension on the State of Emergency status, which was announced soon after the Earthquake that hit on the 26th of October, 2018. The Request was for another three-month extension and was submitted by the Region of the Ionian Islands with a letter sent to the Secretary General for Civil Protection.

It is a well-known fact that the initial period will expire on January 28th, with Mr. Galatiatos justifying this request as “our appreciation is that some issues for which Zakynthos has declared the emergency status have not yet been completed in their procedures. We submitted the request from the General Secretary. Civil Protection for a three month extension and I think it will be acceptable, so as to have the opportunity to complete the procedures. ”

Research Centre Needed

It was also announced that the Mayor would officially send a request for the creation of a Research Centre that will include all the innovative methods that will allow the study and detection of seismic phenomenon and will continuously monitor the precursors and accompanying phenomena of each seismic activity in the area. This is a one-way street of facing a seismic risk, especially in Zakynthos and Kefalonia. It goes without saying that we have lived through, are still living and will live with the idea of earthquakes, what we need is safe guarding in any form and the meaning of this can be interpreted in any way. The state is obliged to offer any possible assistance, and that means the tools and scientific staff to be able to do that.

We are reminded once again, that a research centre is worthwhile considering that earthquakes are generated in the areas of Zakynthos and Kefalonia, where in the past it has caused loss of human lives and invaluable losses of materials and intellectual items. We owe it to our ancestors who experienced the great earthquake disasters; we also owe it to the younger generations who, having knowledge of the natural phenomenon made the first big step by building strong structures after 1953, structures that cope much better with earthquakes of the future. The last earthquake that took place in Zakynthos was the biggest one in all respects after the devastating earthquake of 1953. The anti- earthquake-built Zakynthos has proven herself once again; however, the post-earthquake vibrations that have followed has confirmed to us that we live in a seismic evolving area that can generate the                                                                                               biggest  and most earthquakes throughout Europe.

WE DECIDED …

PAULOS KOLOKOTSAS

MAYOR OF ZAKYNTHOS

“Following from the days of communication that I had with citizens about the aftershock activity, which has also shifted the focus to the core of Zakynthos and is becoming more noticeable, we have proceeded to this meeting with the participation of all the involved institutions, with the Region and other services. We decided that a research centre studying earthquakes of Kefalonia and Zakynthos is required and it is a requirement by the scientists and also to give information to the ordinary citizen of Zakynthos, what to do during and after an earthquake,  the precautionary measures we have mentioned many times, the same has happened in schools, hotels and everywhere, and always assuring that there is no concern, Zakynthos can withstand its seismic activity and have no problems concerning this matter.  Simply I will put, that we have to apply everything that is intended to deal with such a natural phenomena.  I thank Mr. Kopana and all the services here with us for us to coordinate such a plan. ”

GIANNIS KOPANAS

Dr. PHYSICAL-

RESEARCHER OF SEISMOLOGY

“It was a very good meeting at the initiative of the Mayor, which must always be done. We have to be on alert whether or not an earthquake happens. Zakynthos is a seismic island. It has been built on earthquakes. All through her years of history there have been recordings of earthquakes. So we should never be complacent, always be prepared and we should not have to expect someone to tell us whether or not there will be a major earthquake. There is always the possibility. In this case, we do not have something specific to lead us to some concern, but we will advise the Municipality that we have to be on our guard as in Zakynthos we could have a major earthquake at any time and at any time it may occur. I have shown that post-earthquake activity has been evolving since the October 26th earthquake, which seems really, as we feel it, that there is a shift of some centres on the main body of Zakynthos. However, this is not necessarily worrying. We have to follow the phenomenon, scientists in Athens more so because we in Zakynthos, unfortunately have no equipment to follow the phenomenon ourselves nor to be in a state of preparation for anything that may happen.”
