Senio…. a true Zakynthian tradition

Tonight was the first calling of the “Senio” as it is known in Zakynthos.

This is the announcement that next week celebrations for our patron St. Dionysios will begin. A day that every Zakynthian will be celebrating, it is our Patron Saint’s feast day, which also means his name day. At around five o’clock this evening, the church fired 12 cannon shots, which symbolize the 12 months of the year and the days the relics of our Holy Dionysios remains “in his chamber” for those to be blessed .

In addition to that, from the Church bell tower of the Church of St. Dionysios will sound solemnly the Senio, kampanokrousies, as we say. The bells are always hand rung, a tradition that goes way back in the past. Residents of the town and throughout the whole island, when hearing the cannon shots and church bells, will turn towards the direction of the church and make their cross and wish “Xronia Polla for the following year, ” With the help of our Saint.” as they say.

Zakynthians who know that the *senio* will take place gather underneath the Church bells within the square of the church, to watch closely. The next Senio will be continued on the eve of the great celebrations.
