Shipwreck cove… Beach closed again!

As very reliable sources reported to us about the shipwreck being open yesterday, and after seeing photos of people who were actually on the beach on a Social Media page, Zakynthos informer decided to write a report on that fact, but only after being told by several agencies that they were actually taking people to the shipwreck and that they were allowed on the beach. Based on this information we wrote our report and we must remind you that we did state that one should check with their agent as the proposals have not been publicly printed in the Government’s Gazette.

“However we would advise that you get in touch with your agency before going out as we must remind you the proposals have not been issued in the Government’s Gazette and until then we do have our doubts.”

We also mentioned that we would get more information today as we were told that another agency had clients going to the area and that we would wait to see the outcome of that and if their clients were allowed or not on the beach. It seems that after reports of people being allowed on to “shipwreck cove” that has led to the beach area being closed today as Port Authorities would not let the public onto the beach. So what is actually going on? Why is there so much confusion as to whether the beach is open or not?  As much as we have our reliable sources and these agencies are very well respected in our community, therefore there would be no doubt that what they reported would be true and we know it to be a true fact that some have been on the beach recently, confusion is still causing its havoc.

Over the last couple of days it has been a cat and mouse game to find out whether the shipwreck area was actually taking people on the beach area. There have been ticket agencies that have even told us that they in fact took their clients onto the beach, however, with restrictions, perhaps allowing them to stay for a limited time only. There have also been photographs on social media where people have boasted they are “on” the beach and having had their photo taken with the shipwreck in the background. On a popular social media page that is designed to inform visitors, a tour agent boasted and admitted that they have been taking clients and that there was no problem. Even yesterday, we were informed that a few agencies were taking clients today to drop them off on the cove. So as you can see the confusion as to whether the shipwreck is open or not and whether one can go or not has started again after today’s episode of not allowing people to disembark.

Not only are our visitors totally confused with the information they have been given but it also seems business people are just as much confused. It was known that speed boats took to the area to allow their clients to disembark, and others in the area joined in the waiting list to disembark, however, they were met by the port police and were not allowed to disembark on the cove. One would seem it was too much to cope with. After so much hype by social media, ticket agencies and tour operators and of course the proof of people actually visiting the area with their photos, one would naturally think that it WAS open. Unfortunately after today it won’t be, Zakynthos Informer actually spoke to the Port Authorities today, even complaining as to why there is a rumor going around that it is open, obviously they could not answer to that, however they did report that the beach is CLOSED until further notice and yes there have been proposals to lift the ban but they ARE NOT lifting it as such right now as the proposals have NOT been accepted by the necessary authorities and have NOT been publicly published with in the Government’s Gazette.

As for tour operators they too are just as much confused and it seems that whilst others may take the risk of letting their clients down on the beach others have said that they will not. So, it’s back to the original notification that the BEACH IS OFF LIMITS and it will be until further notice, if you would like to see the shipwreck you may do so but from a distance, personally I think that a photo of the wreck by itself on the cove paints a thousand words rather than a thousand being on the beach, and that there are so many beautiful places around the area that keep you in awe,  we also must be reminded that this is for the SAFETY of our visitors thus not putting anyone at risk until the restrictions can be put into place until then BEACH CLOSED is what is FACT!
